The Sherman Flame Tank

The First Tank Battalion Sherman M4A3E8 was a medium tank weighing between 30 and 35 tons, depending on the equipment. It was more than 20 feet long, 10 feet wide and 9-1/2 feet high, powered by a V-8 500-horse Ford water-cooled gasoline engine. It had a five-forward speed and reverse clutch-activated transmission, and was turned by a pair of waist high right and left brake levers that braked the particular track when pulled back.
“By the book,” the M4A3E8 had maximum speed of approximately 25mph. But, some Flame Tankers were known to get it up to 30 mph on a good flat road. Its 180-gallon fuel capacity could take it 100 miles or more, depending on the terrain. The “E8” model was improved with a volute spring suspension and 23-inch wide tracks, 4 inches wider than earlier models. Forward sprockets pulled the tracks over two top idler wheels and, under three sets of four bogey wheels.
